NuNorthern Soul, in its many incarnations, is a concept ‘with no specific musical boundaries’ that sets itself the honourable task of ‘presenting quality music suited to the art of relaxation’. This latest cool-down excursion was conceived when label founder Phat Phil Cooper heard Benjamin James Smith (also known under his collaborative Smith & Mudd moniker) turn in an unexpected acoustic cover version of Crazy P’s 2008 album track, ‘Fascination‘.

Inspired by this curveball rendition, Phil suggested tackling some alternative material, and on 28th January, 2013, the ‘Dedications to the Greats’ double a-side single drops, with an extended, orchestral folk interpretation of ‘Umi Says’, Mos Def’s classic ode to maternal guidance, and a tender performance of ‘Runnin”, the lead single from the Pharcyde’s sophomore album, Labcabincalifornia.

The love that has been poured into these versions is mirrored in presentation of the release: visit the NuNorthern Soul Bandcamp page to pre-order a range of packages, including a limited edition 10″ record with hand-printed sleeve from the mischievous Liverpool street artist, Tomo.
