Title: Scarlet Jungle EP
Label: Eglo Records
Release date: Monday 15th April, 2013
Listen: YouTube
Buy: Kudos Records

More info: Alexander Nut, the Eglo Records lynchpin, DJ and self-described Ancient Transistor, has an impeccable musical ear. Celebrating 4 years of Eglo’s existence, he is issuing a 23-track double-CD at the end of this month, looking back over the imprint’s finest releases and hard-to-find, vinyl only moments. Alongside the preparation of this archive comes a brand new project: the Strange U EP. With a debut live performance in the Boiler Room last month, there is significant interest around these off-kilter ‘witch docotor raps for lives that need saving.’ A beat palette that draws equal parts Sun Ra and Shafiq and lyricism that grips like a Shaolin iron claw, Eglo’s flow shows no signs of slowing as a new trail is blazed through this Scarlet Jungle.

More info: The Message Uni Versa was one of the most overlooked and unfairly dismissed hip hop albums of the last decade. I’ve just listened in full – check it, it’s as relevant now as when it first blew my mind in 2007. Six years on and SoCal husband-and-wife duo Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins have shared a free preview from The Lighthouse, their follow up long player. I hope the critical acclaim awarded the Madlib-produced ‘Seeds‘ has brought enough attention to turn a fresh generation onto the depth, beauty and lyrical potency of this unique pairing.

Artist: Fred Everything
Title: Brothers & Sisters / Legacy
Label: Local Talk Records
Release date: Friday 12th April, 2013
Listen: SoundCloud
Buy: Juno

More info: Hip hop has dominated the new music I’ve been spinning this week, but here to redress the balance is the prolific Stockholm imprint, Local Talk. Their latest outing sees Fred Everything join the roster with a strong, deep house three tracker. I’ve recently dug out Fred’s remix of Bran Van 3000’s ‘Astounded‘, featuring the inimitable vocals of Curtis Mayfield, and it’s great to hear some fresh new sounds from the San Francisco studio talent.
