More info: The day our crew returned from the UK Invasion of Rainer Trüby’s Rootdown party in Freiburg, we checked out the Quentin Collins and Brandon Allen Quartet featuring Omar at the Pizza Express Jazz Club on Dean Street. It was the first time I’d seen UK soul veteran Omar live, and mid-set I wondered just why I’d waited so long. We were treated to a magnificent performance of ‘The Man’, his new single that was first aired on Trevor Nelson’s soul show on BBC Radio 2, and is out now via Freestyle Records with a trio of remixes from LA beatsmith Shafiq Husayn, Scratch Professor and Maddslinky. The package is polished with a new version of ‘There’s Nothing Like This’, breathing new live into the original with an extended arrangement, live horns and strings, and bass from the legendary Pino Palladino.

Title: Re-Edits & More Vol. 1
Label: EDR
Release date: Monday 8th April, 2013
Listen: YouTube
Buy: Piccadilly Records
More info: DJ Vas is an former member of 90s French house outfit Kojak, who enjoyed considerable success alongside contemporaries Daft Punk, Cassius and Air, releasing two albums and twenty-five singles. His solo project broadens this musical gaze, lovingly re-touching forgotten soul, funk and disco gems. My tip on this new 10″ EP is a clever cut up titled ‘One Love’, the source material of which recently went under the razor of Detroit beat maker Andrés.

Primarily known for singing in her native language, here Hovink sings in English, delivering quirky and accomplished versions of The Beatles’ ‘Fool On The Hill’, Carole King’s ‘I Feel The Earth Move’, Jerry Jeff Walker’s ‘I Feel The Earth Move’ and Peggy Lee’s classic ‘For Every Man There’s A Woman’.
