Artist: Angeline Morrison
Title: Are You Ready Cat?
Label: Freestyle Records
Release date: Monday 18th March, 2013
Listen: SoundCloud
Buy: Kudos

More info: Once the silken strings and climbing bass give way to this album’s opening lyrics, the Freestyle faithful with recognise at once the folk-jazz vocals of Angeline Morrison, who has previously lent her tender melodies to the music of Frootful, Lack of Afro and The Ambassadors Of Sorrow. Here, the threads of influence drawing from folk, bossa nova, R&B and jazz are delicately woven together, and the production throughout this tender album gives total focus on that which makes it so enthralling: Morrison’s ethereal and alluring delivery.

Artist: Jesse Futerman
Title: Exquisite Basement
Label: Jus Like Music
Release date: Spring, 2013
Listen: Broken Glass (The Con) on SoundCloud

More info: With stunning artwork from Alice Dufay, the new EP from 21 year old Jesse Futerman is about to drop via the always on point label and blog, Jus Like Music. If you’re new to his sounds, you can still cop a free download of Fuse The Witches, his last EP, on Bandcamp.

An unshakeable jazz root filtered through a clean-cut hip hop aesthetic gives Futerman a pretty distinct sound that grips for all the right reasons; the first time I hit play on ‘Exquisite Basement,’ it was rolling in the background, but two tracks in and I was transfixed. At the time of writing, a couple of tracks included here have been leaked on his SoundCloud, including my EP favourite, ‘Broken Glass (The Con),’ which may or may not allude to a proposed collaboration with a prankster disguised as a well known MC. Futerman needn’t worry though, as with output like this, it’s only a matter of time until his beats are in demand.

Artist: Lucas Arruda
Title: Mafua
Label: Favorite Recordings
Release date: Spring, 2013
Listen: SoundCloud

More info: ‘Sambadi,’ the lead track from Lucas Arruda’s debut LP of the same name, has been picking up early support from some prominent members of the SuncéBeat crew, including guest DJs Mat Mats and Osunlade. The LP is coming soon, but for those in search of upfront flavour, ‘Sambadi’ is available now on a limited 7″ from French label Favourite Recordings. Digging through Arruda’s SoundCloud, I discovered ‘Mafua,’ the track included here, which I’ve now learned is an outtake from this forthcoming album, a sparkling sunshine gem that’s making this cold March morning feel like summer.
