More info: I’ve been digging the Soulpersona sound for some time now, and this week I’d like to extend my gratitude as he flexes his A&R muscle by signing the in-demand session keys player Carl Hudson to Digisoul for a full-length solo debut. On ‘Zoology For Martians’, he teleports our beloved instrumental jazz-funk concept album to a 2013 audience, recalling the gentle touch of Hubbard and Hancock, backed by the heavyweight rhythms of bandmate Nick Van Gelder who turns up on top form throughout. A personal favourite comes by way of ‘Red & Yellow Frog’, one to check for all those like me who have been giving their Don Blackman collection a recent revisit following the sad news of his passing. The good news is that his spirit lives on in a new generation of virtuoso musicians who are spreading the jazz-funk love across the solar system.

More info: Better late than never, the saying goes. I came across this 12″ last month, but it didn’t grab me on first listen. Then I heard Ben Brophy dropping a killer Afro-house edit in the SunceBeat Dome last weekend, and, upon enquiring, discovered it was the very same workout I’d previously passed over. Head straight to ‘Egbe Mi O’ for a Fela Kuti cut up that kicks on a big system and will be in my bag all summer for sure.

More info: Another slept on beauty that came into my life via the Southport Weekender. Big up Groovement Soul’s Keith Dalton for turning me on to this elegant dance floor interpretation of Patrice Rushen’s timeless ‘Settle For My Love’. Vinyl copies are scarce, but it’s worth the search.
